6 questions to ask when choosing an online dating photographer
With online dating photography becoming more popular, here are the six questions you should be asking when choosing an online dating photographer in order to ensure you choose one that suits your tastes and needs.
1. Do they specialise in online dating photography?
If you were choosing a wedding photographer, I’m pretty darn sure you’d choose a photographer who specialises in wedding photography. You’re not going to mess with your wedding day, am I right? Well, finding love is right up there as one of the most important things you can do in life, so don’t value it any less. If you’re taking the step to invest in online dating photos, then invest in an online dating photographer who offers it as one of their priority areas rather than an add-on to their business model.
2. Do they understand how dating sites work?
It’s quite important that they have some understanding of what kind of photos work for online dating websites. Hopefully they will also know how many photos you should use at any one time, the different kinds of photos you’re going to need and the difference between the main profile photo and any supporting photos. Even better if they have online dating experience and can understand the journey you’re about to embark on.
3. Do they shoot in a studio or on location?
This will come down to preference and taste, but personally, I think dating shots taken in a studio come across as a bit cheesy and/or ‘trying too hard’, neither of which are great in the search for online love. Photos taken on location work much better for online dating photos because the photographer can aim to make it look more natural, like a friend (with a really good camera) has caught you out having fun. (They just happen to be clear, hi-res and in focus, whoop)
4. Do you love their portfolio?
This should go without saying but before you hire your online dating photographer, take some time to go through the portfolio section on their website. Do you love what you see? Does their style match your tastes? If not, then keep looking.
5. Do they make you feel confident, happy and relaxed?
Your online dating photos need to capture you looking all those things – confident, happy and relaxed. It’s easier to feel that way on a shoot if you connect with the photographer in a good way. Do you like the way they write on their website? Check their ‘about’ page and see if it resonates with you. How about the way they write emails? Or any materials/resources they send? Check in with yourself about how your interactions with them make you feel? If their tone and style leaves you cold, then they’re probably not for you.
6. Are they recognised by or do they have the backing of the dating industry in any way?
Ideally, you want your dating photographer to have some connections to or endorsement by the dating industry so that you know they are a recognised service provider for the industry.
